PPL Discovers New Gas Reserves in Sindh

 

Pakistan Petroleum Limited (PPL) has announced a new gas discovery at the Dolphin X-1 exploration well in Sujawal, Sindh, marking another development in the country’s efforts to expand indigenous energy resources.

The exploration well was drilled to a depth of 3,850 metres to assess hydrocarbon potential in the Chiltan Formation. Following acid stimulation, the well produced approximately 0.942 million standard cubic feet of gas per day, with a heating value of around 1,000 Btu per standard cubic foot.

The well also recorded initial condensate production, providing further indications of hydrocarbon presence in the area. PPL said the results point to an active petroleum system in the region.

The discovery could open the door to additional exploration in the marshy onshore areas of Sujawal as well as nearby shallow offshore extensions. Further drilling and geological studies may help determine the overall size and commercial potential of the newly identified resources.

The development comes as Pakistan continues to search for additional domestic oil and gas supplies to strengthen energy security and reduce reliance on imported fuel. New local discoveries could help ease pressure on the country’s energy requirements over the longer term.

Further exploration around Dolphin X-1 could reveal additional reserves and encourage greater investment in Sindh’s onshore and shallow offshore areas. The discovery therefore represents not only a new potential source of domestic gas but also an opportunity for broader exploration activity in the region.
