Mega Project Milestone: Frontier Works Organization Prepares Rawalpindi Ring Road for Handover

The Rawalpindi Ring Road (RRR) mega-project has entered its final stretch, reaching 98% completion. With the core civil works finalized, the installation of the toll plaza remains the sole outstanding task before the bypass opens to public traffic.

This progress update was shared during a high-level progress review meeting chaired by Rawalpindi Divisional Commissioner Salman Ghani. The Punjab Ring Road Authority is slated to oversee the installation and administrative operations of the upcoming toll plaza, including traffic control and toll collection at government-sanctioned rates.

Infrastructure Highlights & Financial Status

Construction across the 38.3-kilometer corridor has successfully wrapped up nearly all major physical structures:

  • Civil Engineering: The main carriageway, flyovers, subways, interchanges, and bridges are entirely complete.

  • Safety & Utilities: Road barriers, lane markings, directional signage, and streetlights are fully installed.

  • Funding: The Punjab government has disbursed over Rs. 29 billion for the project, with the final remaining funds expected to clear within the next one to two weeks.

Directives for the Final Phase

To prepare the corridor for formal inauguration, Commissioner Ghani directed administrative teams to expedite finishing works. Key directives include:

  • Green Belts: Accelerating extensive landscaping and tree-plantation campaigns along both shoulders of the highway.

  • Security & Control: Establishing a dedicated highway policing unit and custom traffic management system to ensure safe transit.

  • Thalian Interchange: Officials confirmed that work on the Thalian Interchange will be executed as a separate, standalone project after the main Ring Road becomes operational.

Projected Urban Impact

Once opened, the Ring Road will act as a major bypass corridor, diverting heavy commercial and freight traffic away from the metropolitan center. This shift is expected to significantly reduce severe gridlocks on major arterials like GT Road, Peshawar Road, and Murree Road, while lowering commuter travel times, fuel consumption, and vehicle emissions in the twin cities.
