Climate Alert: NDMA Issues Glacial Flood Warning for GB and KP Ahead of Intense Monsoon Spell
The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an urgent advisory warning of potential glacial lake outburst floods (GLOFs) and landslides across Gilgit-Baltistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, as an intense monsoon system persists through Monday.
According to the Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD), the compounding effects of heavy monsoonal precipitation and elevated temperatures have significantly raised the risk of GLOF events, where rapidly melting glaciers cause structural failures in natural glacial dams and release massive volumes of water downstream.
Escalated Flash Flood and Landslide Risks
Disaster management officials have cautioned that sudden flash flooding remains highly probable, particularly within low-lying terrains, mountain valleys, and areas adjacent to natural river channels. Additionally, prolonged rainfall is expected to saturate and destabilize soil structures in hilly zones, increasing the risk of landslides capable of blocking major transit routes.
In response to these conditions, the NDMA has advised local populations in vulnerable sectors to stay vigilant and strictly adhere to emergency safety directives. Communities are strongly urged to restrict non-essential travel through mountain passes and flood-prone corridors for the duration of the weather spell.
Emergency Preparedness and Tourist Advisory
District administrative units and rescue teams have been placed on high alert to handle potential evacuations or clearing operations. Concurrently, the PMD has released a specialized advisory for tourists traveling through northern Pakistan, reminding them to verify road connectivity and localized weather updates before embarking on journeys, as rain-slicked terrain and dense cloud cover can severely compromise driving visibility.
Emergency officials emphasize that proactive community compliance and early shifts to designated safe zones can greatly minimize casualties and property damage. Both the NDMA and PMD are maintaining round-the-clock monitoring of the moving monsoon system and will issue real-time updates as conditions evolve.
