LESCO has ended free electricity facility for senior officers.
The Lahore Electric Supply Company (LESCO) has reportedly withdrawn the free electricity facility for its senior officers in Grades 18 to 20, requiring them to pay their utility bills out of pocket for the first time in nearly three decades.
According to internal sources, the administrative shift brings an end to a long-standing benefit enjoyed by senior personnel for roughly 30 years. Under the previous framework, Grade 18 officers were entitled to up to 6,000 free electricity units annually, while Grade 19 and Grade 20 officers received annual allocations of 8,000 and 10,000 free units, respectively.
While LESCO has actively implemented the withdrawal, sources indicate that officers in several other power distribution companies (DISCOs) have approached the courts and secured stay orders, allowing them to temporarily retain their free utility allowances.
In response, LESCO officers have criticized the uneven enforcement, arguing that restoring the perk in selected DISCOs creates an unfair imbalance. They have called upon the Ministry of Energy to establish a uniform, nationwide policy by completely eliminating the free electricity facility across all power distribution companies rather than permitting fragmented regulations to persist.
This policy implementation aligns with ongoing federal initiatives aimed at curtailing circular debt and reforming the national power sector.
