Digital Travel: Traditional Passports Phased Out as E-Passports Become Mandatory in UAE

Pakistan will exclusively roll out e-Passports for its expatriate community residing in the UAE starting July 20, 2026, following a recent directive from the Embassy of Pakistan in Abu Dhabi. The diplomatic mission confirmed that all passport requests channeled through the Embassy of Pakistan in Abu Dhabi and the Consulate General of Pakistan in Dubai will exclusively yield digital e-Passports moving forward. This systemic shift has been deployed to fully conform with the regulatory frameworks of the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). Authorities stated that the initiative is designed to heighten document integrity and modernize the state's travel credentials. The e-Passport features an integrated microprocessor chip that retains the user's personal details and biometric fingerprints, rendering it highly fraud-resistant and accelerating verification checkpoints during global transit.

The diplomatic authorities also noted that active machine-readable passports will maintain full legitimacy until their designated expiration dates. Expats who currently possess an unexpired machine-readable passport do not have to initiate an immediate replacement. Travelers whose current documents hold more than six months of residual validity are encouraged to delay their renewal requests until they approach their actual expiration window. This measured approach is intended to streamline the operational migration to the e-Passport framework and prevent a bottleneck of premature renewals. The Pakistani Embassy has additionally published a revised fee matrix corresponding to the production and renewal of these chip-embedded e-Passports. Citizens are urged to check the modified pricing tiers prior to logging their formal processing requests. The updated mandate takes absolute effect for every passport application tendered across Pakistan’s consular networks in the UAE from July 20, 2026. Pakistani residents based in the emirates are instructed to review the revised operational rules and gather the necessary paperwork before booking a renewal or fresh issuance session.
