Pakistan: Ghee and edible oil costs expected to rise following fuel price hike

Following the steep jump in fuel rates, a subsequent spike in ghee and cooking oil costs is anticipated, heightening citizen anxieties regarding the cost of living. In Pakistan, surges in petroleum valuations traditionally trigger price hikes for basic commodities. After the latest adjustment, several sectors, such as transit services, have already seen increases despite official pledges to the contrary.

A consultant for the Pakistan Vanaspati Manufacturers Association, Kainat Raza, has cautioned about a looming jump in the prices of ghee and vegetable oil. She noted that elevated fuel rates have drastically pushed up manufacturing overheads for factories, while the hike in diesel costs has rendered logistics and delivery charges nearly unsustainable. According to her estimates, the market prices for ghee and edible oil may climb by Rs100 to Rs150.
