Hunza, Skardu on High Alert as NDMA Warns of Flood Risk Over Next 72 Hours

 

The National Disaster Management Authority (NDMA) has issued an alert for several northern regions of Pakistan, warning of heavy rain and thunderstorms expected over the next 72 hours.

According to the warning, parts of Gilgit-Baltistan, Azad Jammu and Kashmir, and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa may experience intense rainfall accompanied by strong winds. The weather could lead to rising water levels in rivers, streams and nullahs, increasing the risk of flash floods and landslides.

Urban flooding is also possible in areas that receive prolonged or heavy rainfall. Gilgit, Hunza, Muzaffarabad, Swat, Chitral and Mansehra have been identified among the areas facing a higher risk.

The NDMA has directed concerned departments to closely monitor the situation and ensure that emergency personnel, equipment and other resources remain ready for immediate response.

Residents in vulnerable areas have been advised to avoid rivers, streams, nullahs and other waterways during periods of heavy rain. People living in low-lying areas have also been urged to remain vigilant and follow instructions issued by local authorities.

Tourists travelling through the affected regions have been encouraged to avoid unnecessary travel during severe weather, as flash floods and landslides can develop suddenly and with little warning.

The NDMA said the advance warning is aimed at helping local administrations and communities prepare for possible emergencies and minimise the impact of the expected extreme weather.
