Tragic Fire at PIMS Nursery in Islamabad Claims Lives of Newborns

 

A tragic fire broke out at the Pakistan Institute of Medical Sciences (PIMS) in Islamabad on Wednesday morning, with the blaze erupting in the nursery of the gynaecology ward. Rescue and hospital officials reported that 14 newborns lost their lives, while one baby was rescued.

The fire reportedly started at around 7:00 a.m. on the third floor of the Mother and Child Hospital. Initial reports have attributed the incident to an electrical fault, while other reports cited an air-conditioner compressor as the possible source. Rescue teams reached the hospital and brought the fire under control, with six fire brigade vehicles and four ambulances involved in the emergency response.

Authorities have ordered an investigation into the incident to determine the exact cause and establish whether any safety or administrative failures contributed to the tragedy. An inquiry committee headed by the additional deputy commissioner general has been formed. The incident has also raised serious concerns about fire safety and emergency preparedness in healthcare facilities.
