Pakistan Targets $1.5 Billion Hybrid Rice Export Market in China

Pakistan has the potential to tap into a $1.5 billion hybrid rice export market in China, as demand for Pakistani non-Basmati rice continues to expand. Industry estimates indicate that Chinese buyers could eventually import hybrid rice worth around $1.5 billion from Pakistan.

Rice exports to China have already recorded significant growth. During the first quarter of 2026, Pakistan shipped rice worth more than $45.19 million to China, compared with $7.39 million during the same period in 2025. According to Chinese customs data, this represents an impressive 511% year-on-year increase.

The opportunity comes as Pakistan’s overall rice exports have declined from their previous peak. In FY2024-25, the country exported approximately 5.82 million tonnes of rice valued at $3.35 billion, with non-Basmati varieties accounting for more than 86% of total exports. However, rice export earnings fell to around $2.29 billion in FY2025-26.

Pakistan is also taking steps to strengthen hybrid rice production. Punjab University and Wuhan University have developed a new variety called PU-786, which can reportedly produce up to 140 maunds per acre and offers resistance to diseases, heat, and pests.

If Pakistani producers can consistently meet China’s quality, food safety, and supply requirements, the expanding market could provide a major boost to export earnings. It could also support greater investment in hybrid rice production and strengthen Pakistan’s position in the international rice trade.
