Pakistan is Developing Its Own Netflix-Style Platform for Local Content

Pakistan is making significant progress in the digital entertainment sector. Federal Minister Ahsan Iqbal has revealed that the government is developing a local Over-The-Top (OTT) streaming platform. Designed as a homegrown alternative to services like Netflix, the platform will primarily feature Pakistani dramas, films, and other original content for viewers both within the country and overseas.

The minister also stated that discussions are underway with Netflix and several other leading international streaming platforms. The goal is to secure greater exposure for Pakistani productions and expand their presence in global markets. This strategy reflects the government's commitment to promoting local storytelling on both domestic and international levels.

Although details such as the platform’s official name, release timeline, subscription plans, and complete content catalog have not yet been disclosed, the initiative is expected to boost Pakistan’s digital media industry. It is likely to provide new opportunities for filmmakers, actors, and content creators while connecting with millions of viewers, particularly in regions with large Urdu-speaking communities.

The proposal has received positive feedback from industry figures, including ARY Digital CEO Salman Iqbal. According to industry experts, Pakistan has the creative talent and technical expertise needed to establish a successful streaming platform. A dedicated local OTT service could also generate employment opportunities and lessen dependence on foreign streaming services.
