Digital Transit: Electronic Tolling System Coming to Pakistan's Motorway Network

Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan issued these directives on June 12, 2026, while presiding over a session at the National Highways and Motorway Police Headquarters. He mandated the prompt integration of the M2 Motorway (Islamabad-Lahore) into the ITS initiative.

With the updated mechanism, motorists will utilize electronic transponders or synced profiles to settle toll fees without coming to a halt. This non-stop passage setup will eliminate lengthy lines, conserve travel time, and optimize vehicle movement. Monitoring cameras, network connections, and protection setups will merge into a single digital platform. The payment infrastructure will additionally link with Safe City surveillance networks to enhance crime detection.

The strategy prioritizes transit protection and commuter comfort. Officials will modernize rest stops to offer standardized amenities. Highway Patrol personnel will maintain a constant presence at all service zones. Crisis intervention will be upgraded through the inclusion of Rescue 1122 teams, firefighting units, fully provisioned ambulances, and arrangements for medical helicopters at critical junctions.

These upgrades will transform expressways into more productive, protected, and driver-centric corridors. Specialists anticipate the transition will curb traffic bottlenecks, stimulate commercial growth, and elevate Pakistan's transit infrastructure closer to global benchmarks. The state intends to finalize the primary modifications rapidly to aid millions of everyday travelers.
