Severe Heatwave Warning Issued Across Khyber Pakhtunkhwa

Khyber Pakhtunkhwa’s Provincial Disaster Management Authority (KP PDMA) has instructed all deputy commissioners to implement emergency measures in anticipation of an extreme heatwave forecast for the province's plains from May 8 to May 10.

Temperature Forecast

According to the official advisory, peak daytime heat is expected to hit:

  • 43°C to 47°C: Dera Ismail Khan, Tank, Bannu, Karak, and Lakki Marwat.

  • 39°C to 43°C: Peshawar, Nowshera, Charsadda, Mardan, Swabi, Haripur, and Kohat.

Weather Outlook

The PDMA noted that a minor westerly disturbance is predicted to reach most areas starting late May 10. This weather system is likely to linger over the upper regions until May 13, offering some respite from the blistering conditions.

Public Safety & Awareness

Administrative heads have been tasked with launching awareness drives, particularly targeting vulnerable groups such as children, the elderly, and those with chronic illnesses. Residents are advised to:

  • Avoid sun exposure during peak daylight hours.

  • Maintain high fluid intake to stay hydrated.

  • Watch for early indicators of heat-related distress.

Emergency Response & Infrastructure

Health departments and local governments are required to establish heatstroke relief centers, cooling zones, and mobile assistance units in high-traffic locations. These sites must be stocked with cold water, proper ventilation or cooling tools, and medical personnel.

Sector-Specific Guidance

Farmers are encouraged to adjust their agricultural schedules based on the forecast and prioritize the safety of their livestock. Additionally, emergency responders are on high alert to handle potential fire outbreaks during the dry, hot spell.

This regional warning coincides with a nationwide heat advisory, as authorities across Pakistan move to mitigate the risks of record-breaking summer temperatures.
