Govt Plans 32km Commercial Corridor in Islamabad With Rs. 500 Billion Potential
The Capital Development Authority (CDA) is planning a major commercial development along Islamabad’s G.T. Road that could generate more than Rs. 500 billion in revenue for the civic authority.
CDA Chairman Sohail Ashraf has directed the relevant departments to accelerate planning and preparatory work ahead of the project’s expected launch in the coming months. Officials said the development is likely to be offered in phases instead of putting the entire area on the market at once.
The project involves land acquired by the CDA in 1967. The authority currently holds around 3,550 kanals along an approximately 16-kilometre stretch between EME College and Nicholson Monument, with a 200-foot-wide strip on both sides of G.T. Road. Following planning and development, officials estimate that nearly 2,000 kanals could be allocated for commercial purposes.
The CDA is also taking steps to reclaim remaining portions of its land currently affected by encroachments. A considerable area has already been recovered, while efforts are continuing to clear other structures and activities from CDA property.
A four-member committee has been established to finalise the design and development plan for the proposed commercial corridor. The authority is also evaluating different types of commercial activities that could be introduced in the area.
According to CDA officials, the project could become a significant source of revenue if the land is developed and sold under the proposed plan. It could also provide additional opportunities for businesses and investment along one of Islamabad’s major transportation routes.
