UMT Opens Pakistan’s First School of Artificial Intelligence
The University of Management and Technology (UMT) has officially announced the establishment of its School of Artificial Intelligence (SAI), expanding its focus on artificial intelligence education, research and innovation in Pakistan.
Built around the theme Intelligence for a Better Tomorrow, the new school aims to promote the use of technology to improve lives and address challenges faced by society.
The foundation for SAI was laid in 2019 with the establishment of UMT’s Department of Artificial Intelligence. As the field has continued to expand and influence industries, economies and communities, the department has now been developed into a dedicated school.
SAI will focus on more than the technical aspects of artificial intelligence. It aims to provide students, researchers, entrepreneurs and industry professionals with opportunities to use AI for human development, national progress and practical problem-solving.
The school will combine academic education, research, innovation and industry collaboration to develop skilled professionals for an increasingly AI-focused world. Its activities will cover emerging technologies, advanced research and practical AI applications aimed at addressing real-world challenges.
Through academic programmes, research projects, innovation initiatives and industry partnerships, SAI plans to prepare professionals who can develop intelligent technologies while understanding their broader impact and applying them responsibly.
The establishment of the school reflects UMT’s efforts to prepare students and researchers for changes in the future of work, industry and society, while promoting the responsible use of artificial intelligence.
UMT Chairman and President Ibrahim Hasan Murad said the initiative was designed to match the rapid pace at which AI is transforming the world. He said universities should play an active role in shaping technological developments, adding that SAI would bring education, research and innovation together while keeping human progress at the centre.
SAI Founding Dean Dr Atif Alvi said the school builds on UMT’s existing work in research, inquiry and innovation. He said its goal is to develop AI expertise while creating an environment where research and ideas can be transformed into practical solutions with meaningful social impact.
