Govt Allows Smaller Petrol Purchases Under Fuel Relief Scheme
The federal government has removed the five-litre minimum petrol purchase requirement under the Prime Minister’s Special Relief Scheme, allowing eligible motorcycle, rickshaw and three-wheeler users to purchase smaller quantities of fuel.
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif approved the change following public feedback received during the first 48 hours of the scheme’s nationwide implementation. Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar reviewed the programme’s progress during a National Steering Committee meeting held on September 18.
Under the updated mechanism, eligible beneficiaries will receive a weekly fuel token worth Rs500. The token offers a relief of Rs100 per litre and can now be used to purchase petrol in any quantity, removing the previous requirement to buy at least five litres in a single transaction. Petrol stations are not permitted to deduct any amount or impose service charges.
The government has also revised the eligibility criteria for motorcycles and three-wheelers, increasing the maximum vehicle age from 15 to 20 years. For cars with engines of up to 800cc, the existing arrangement remains unchanged, with one 10-litre fuel token provided every 10 days.
Authorities have further directed relevant departments to establish alternative arrangements in areas with limited internet connectivity, including Azad Jammu and Kashmir, Gilgit-Baltistan, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and remote rural regions.
