Pakistan to Host South Asian Games in April 2027 After 23-Year Gap

 

Pakistan is preparing to host the South Asian Games from April 3 to 11, 2027, welcoming athletes and officials from across the region. The event will mark the country’s return as host after more than two decades.

Pakistan last hosted the South Asian Games in 2004, with Islamabad serving as the main host city. For the 2027 edition, competitions are planned across Islamabad, Lahore, and Peshawar, with athletes expected to compete in 28 sports featuring a total of 346 medal events.

More than 3,200 athletes are expected to participate in the regional sporting event. Preparations are already underway, with the federal government approving the required funding and relevant authorities working on venues, logistics, and other arrangements.

India has reportedly endorsed the proposed dates through its representative, although its participation has not yet been officially confirmed. The final list of participating countries will depend on further discussions and formal confirmations.

Hosting the Games will give Pakistan an opportunity to showcase its sports infrastructure and organizational capabilities, while allowing local athletes to compete on home soil against some of the region’s leading competitors.

The event could also encourage investment in sports facilities and provide young Pakistani athletes with valuable exposure to high-level international competition. With preparations progressing in Islamabad, Lahore, and Peshawar, Pakistan is moving closer to hosting the regional sporting event once again.

The 2027 South Asian Games are expected to bring together athletes, officials, and sports fans from across South Asia, providing Pakistan with an important opportunity to strengthen its position in regional sports and promote greater sporting cooperation.
