Resource Ownership: "From Now On, Our Pink Salt Belongs to Our Identity," Asserts Maryam Nawaz

Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has unveiled an ambitious development initiative designed to revolutionize Pakistan’s pink salt sector, prioritizing local value addition, job creation, and a stronger global export footprint.

Key Highlights of the Initiative

  • The Pink Salt Mineral Processing Zone: A massive 110-acre dedicated industrial zone will be established near Quaidabad. It is designed to house over 200 industrial units, a dedicated Business Facilitation Centre, and a flagship retail outlet. The hub is projected to attract roughly $150 million in investments and generate nearly 10,000 new jobs.

  • Shifting Away from Raw Exports: Pakistan is home to the world’s second-largest salt deposits at the historic Khewra Mine. Rather than exporting the mineral in its raw, low-value form, this new roadmap focuses on refining it domestically into high-tier finished products, including gourmet edible salt, decorative lamps, tiles, and therapeutic wellness goods.

  • Financial Support for Investors: Through the newly launched Chief Minister Pink Salt Value Addition Financing Scheme, local entrepreneurs can access interest-free loans ranging from Rs. 5 million to Rs. 50 million. This funding is targeted toward acquiring modern machinery, advanced processing systems, secure packaging, and international branding. Investors can submit applications online via pinksalt.punjab.gov.pk.

The Sovereign Goal: Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif emphasized that the core objective of this initiative is ensuring that Pakistan’s premium resources are no longer sold under foreign labels. From this point forward, Himalayan pink salt products leaving the country will proudly carry the "Made in Pakistan" brand name worldwide.
