Pakistani Student Secures Silver Medal at 37th International Biology Olympiad

Pakistan has celebrated a distinguished milestone in the global scientific arena. Hassan Atif Cheema secured a silver medal at the 37th International Biology Olympiad (IBO) 2026, hosted in Vilnius, Lithuania, between July 12 and 19.

The international tournament assembled over 300 competitors representing approximately 78 nations. Rising researchers completed rigorous theoretical and laboratory assessments covering advanced life sciences. These evaluations measure comprehensive analytical reasoning, empirical problem-solving, and laboratory mastery beyond standard academic curricula.

Hassan Atif Cheema, representing International School Lahore (Legacy Campus), clinched the silver distinction through his exemplary score. Additionally, fellow Pakistani contender Muhammad Mutahir from Karachi Grammar School received an honorable Merit Certificate, reinforcing the expanding potential of the nation's youth in science.

The national cohort was identified via the STEM Careers Program, a collaborative initiative managed by the Higher Education Commission (HEC) alongside the Pakistan Institute of Engineering and Applied Sciences (PIEAS). The selected candidates underwent specialized training modules at leading facilities, including the National Institute for Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (NIBGE).

Pakistan has maintained active participation in the IBO since 2006. This silver medal marks another significant advancement in the country's footprint across worldwide academic competitions, reflecting the dedication of the scholars, their faculty mentors, and institutional backing. Achievements of this caliber serve to encourage future generations of students across Pakistan to enter STEM disciplines.
