Over 200 Volunteers Clear Nearly Two Tons of Waste from Rawal Dam

Over 200 volunteers joined hands in a targeted environmental cleanup drive at Rawal Dam, gathering roughly two tons of trash from the vicinity to foster eco-friendly practices and elevate civic consciousness regarding waste management.

The event was jointly hosted by the Capital Development Authority (CDA) and the Metropolitan Corporation Islamabad (MCI) in partnership with Jazz World, executing instructions from the CDA Chairman and Islamabad Chief Commissioner. The cleanup operation was headed by MCI Chief Officer Dr. Anum and drew participation from Jazz World representatives, CDA and MCI personnel, delegates from several non-governmental groups, students, and community volunteers. Throughout the drive, workers retrieved 80 sacks of refuse and eliminated nearly two tons of trash scattered near Rawal Dam. Speaking to the gathering, Dr. Anum highlighted that the movement was launched in the larger public interest to safeguard local ecosystems and promote mindful waste handling. She underscored that active citizen involvement remains crucial for conserving natural habitats and keeping the surroundings unpolluted. She noted that the CDA and MCI are currently partnering with the Punjab Government alongside related departments on durable strategies to shield Rawal Dam from degradation. These interventions feature the construction of a Sewage Treatment Plant (STP) aimed at stopping polluted runoff from draining into the waterbody. Dr. Anum further appealed to residents, especially households along the natural channels originating in Bhara Kahu and Murree, to refrain from throwing garbage into watercourses, pointing out that these tributaries represent primary pathways for pollutants reaching Rawal Dam. To mark the end of the activity, the CDA and MCI acknowledged the valuable support of Jazz World and all volunteer teams, reiterating their intention to sustain such collaborative community drives to ensure Islamabad stays clean, green, and sustainable.
